The tree is dying. Millions mourn. There are many among them who strive constantly to find a way to nurture the tree back to health. After all, beyond its significance as an icon and its place in our hearts, there are practical concerns. It is our lifeline. Our one living example of its kind. We do not yet know how to reproduce it and I suppose we never will.
As others scramble to find some last minute, miracle way out of this, I, as the tree's principle guardian, sit with the tree. I sit and remember our struggle. I sit and think of what the tree means for me and wonder what, if anything, we meant for the tree.
