The scattering of the gods. The day mankind won. A new era dawned. Their colossal bodies were harvested for the ultra rich magical materials they possessed. Blood, muscle, fat, organs, and bone. Humans were frantic in their reaping, desperate to rip away what they could before other people got to it. So frantic, that they missed some parts.
A slither of bone here. A drop of blood there. Dropped into a river, down a gulch, onto the sands. Left to gestate for generations, as the magical upsurge in the days since the scattering began to ebb away. And the thing with gods is that they are hard to kill. They tend to grow back, clawing up from the earth.
Gods have long memories and are not known for their forgiving nature.
