Wilder and wilder these lands grow as nature burns away under the fires of industry. It is man who loses his sense of order. The instinct for violence is replaced by a confused desire for it, just as the drive for love becomes a tool of conquest, and pain no longer warns of injury but indicates a sense of progress. To what, to where, is established only in men's minds, a dream suspended between many thoughts but a dream nonetheless. The sense of journey pushes them - they think forward - into further atrocity. They have no destination. And only when they look back they see all they have ruined, and then they must justify ruination with further ruination, so it does not seem so bad by comparison.
