He couldn't bear the pressure of command. That's why he led them all into those mountains, after the routed wild-men. It wasn't in glory or bloodlust but in fear - fear that he might seem weak or indecisive. He was quick and good with his lance but the judgement of his elders weighed heavier on him than his common wits.
So they trudged into those high white peaks and disappear into the blizzard of history.
