The man has been swimming for a long time, out on the pitiless iron of the sea. Churning waves in all directions. He’s been going this way for a long time. Perhaps currents and winds have blown him of course. His muscles burn to numbness with the strain. His lungs burn. He just wants a spit of land to relieve the constant effort of staying alive. Perhaps he has chosen the wrong way. So he turns around. Changes course. Prepares to swim for a long time. Perhaps forever.
