They did it because they could. Rather than changing the way we lived, we instead chose to tackle the rising temperatures by going straight to the source. The sun.
The sphere would do two things: block out much of the heat emitted by the star, which would cool the earth, and it would also generate an immense amount of power, owned and distributed by the few companies lucky enough to own it.
About halfway through construction, some aneurysm of physics occured. The new conditions set by the sphere caused something to happen in the core of the sun. Then it's surface started turning to gold.
It took a matter of minutes.
There was a bright flash, as brilliant golden light encapsulated the solar system, then darkness, as a great golden bauble replaced the only thing we had.
