He sees the deserts, the temples, the ruins, the jewellery makers, the well diggers, the dancers, the flute players, the snake merchants, the camels and the sun. He sees these things, but speaks not a word of any of their many languages, and does not understand a moment of their day, or how to say their names. And yet in him is granted the power of the division of their lands, which is drawn in crayon, from the A to the K on an old map he has to hand.
