‘How deep is it?’
‘Deep enough.’
The pit was indeed deeper than I could have imagined. Darkness so absolute made it seem as if it drove downward without end, and I had no evidence to suggest otherwise.
‘Go on then, chuck it in.’
‘What, now?’
‘Well, what are you waiting for?’
I swallowed. ‘What, just take it out and throw it in? That’s it?’
‘Yep.’
‘Well. Okay then.’
So I unplugged my brain and held it in one hand.
‘Will it hurt.’
‘No.’
‘Oh. Will I feel better?’
‘You’ll feel nothing.’
I took a step closer to the precipice.
‘Perfect,’ I said, as my brain glittered down into the endless shadows.
