An unladen horse got a lotta extra pace on one carrying a rider. Makes corralling the unbroken ones that much harder, cause if they slip the corral then they're gone and there's no catching them. I've seen men shoot their guns in the air in frustration, as if that's gonna bring a wild mare back.
It happens to the best of us, seeing a horse escape. Of course, without a herd a lot of them get picked off on their own. They don't know that though. They just smell the grass in the wind, feel the blood pumping in their legs, then they're off. Galloping is all they know.
