Looking out at the ant hill in my garden, knowing it is not just a singular collective of creatures, but one fort in a biological war that spans continents. Red and black ants are the major belligerents, sending out armies in their hundreds of thousands in vast columns to ranksack other colonies, while many other species are caught in the crossfire. Atrocities occur each day, under our feet, and we never even know. The world shifts. I am beginning to think it isn’t my garden at all.
