The siege is a constant barrage of sound. The pop of the Ottoman artillery firing and the peppering of their shot against the Theodosian walls. The rattle of their kettle drums and distant hoorays when a tower crumbles. The moments between the thunderous boom of the great bombard that shakes the earth and buckles the walls.
But it is when, on that Monday morning, a great silence greets the dawn, that the exhausted Byzantines know their last day has come.
